China has pressured most of the world to sever formal diplomatic ties with Taipei.
Ripley : Why do you think the communication has really gone south since 2016?
go south : （今までは良かった状況などが）悪くなる、ダメになる
Thai : Well, I think the situation has changed a lot and China’s plan towards the region is very different.
中国の計画の中には、台湾上空における軍事威嚇や東シナ海での日本との衝突、南シナ海での人工島の軍事拠点化なども含まれています。
Ripley : Do you have faith that the United States would defend Taiwan if the mainland were to try to move on Taiwan?

Tsai : I do have faith, given the long-term relationship that we have with the US. And also, the support of the people of the US as well as the Congress and the administration has been very helpful.

蔡英文氏は次のように言っています。
軍政改革を早急に推し進めなくてはならない。
今はおそらく台湾国民にとって最も困難な時期でしょう。
We have to expedite our military reform so that we have the ability to defend ourselves.
This is probably the most challenging time for the people of Taiwan.
そして、冷静に力強くこう結んでいます。
We’re not panicked, we’re not anxious, because we have gone through so many difficulties in the past.
