オーストラリアのスコット・モリソン首相は、今後4年間に渡りコアラの保護のために記録的な3500万米ドルを使うことを発表しました。

Australia will spend a record $50 million Australian ($35 million US) over the next four years to boost long-term protection and recovery of its koala population, Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s office said in a statement on Saturday.

モリソン首相の言葉です。

“Koalas are one of Australia’s most loved and best recognised icons, both here at home and across the world, and we are committed to protecting them for generations to come,” Morrison said in the statement.

コアラは、国際自然保護連合(IUCN)の絶滅危惧種レッドリストの、絶滅の危険性が高いと判断された ‘vulnerable’ （危急種）に属しています。

The koala is listed as “vulnerable” on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List, which catalogs species at risk of extinction.
