大腸がんは、colon cancerと言うそうですが、colonは結腸。
では、直腸がんの場合はrectum cancerと言うのかと思いきや、rectumは人前で言うとembarrassingな単語のようです。「結腸」は良いけど、「直腸」はembarrassing??? 不思議ですね。
私のアメリカ人の先生によると、breasts のことを、tits と言ったり、boobs と言ったりするのと同じような感じだそうです。その話から先生が思い出して教えてくださったニュース。
