アメリカ最高裁は、大学入学における人種を考慮した優遇措置を廃止するという歴史的な判決を下しました。このニュースは先日クラス 3 のリスニングでもやりましたね。
CNN ENGLISH EXPRESS 10月号の Anderson Cooper 360°でも取り上げられていました。（今回はアンダーソン・クーパー氏に代わり、ジョン・バーマン氏が司会）
affirmative action : 積極的差別是正措置 公民権運動とともに生まれた考え方で、過去の差別的な社会構造を克服し、平等な機会を確保するために実施される政策・措置のこと。
しかし問題点も指摘され、その最たる例が「逆差別」で、大学入試で少数派の学生を優遇して入学させるために、より優秀な他の生徒が落とされるという実体がある。憲法との整合性という問題もあり、今回の判決では、「法の下の平等な保護を定め、市民権を保障する」という合衆国憲法修正第14条に反するとの判断が下った。
In his majority opinion, the chief justice writes that because the programs, quote, “unavoidably employ race in a negative manner, involve racial stereotyping, and lack meaningful end points, those admissions programs cannot be reconciled with the guarantees of the Equal Protection Clause.”

この判決に対して、CNN の政治コメンテーターのバン・ジョーンズ氏は、
Look, I was born in 1968. I’m the first person in my family that was born with all my rights.
I’m the first person in my family that was born with a right to vote. So, apparently, one generation is enough.
「あのですね、私は1968年生まれです。生まれながらに（アメリカ人としての）全ての権利を有していたのは、家族の中で私が初めてです。家族の中で、生まれながらに選挙権を持っていたのは私が初めてでした。どうやら、（最高裁にとってこうした社会的平等の実現の努力は）一世代で十分なようですね。」
ジョーンズ氏によると、イエール大学やプリンストン大学のような大学にいる白人学生の半数は、卒業生の親族や子孫への入学優遇制度である「レガシー入学」で入学した学生です。
続けてジョーンズ氏は次のように言います。
If you want to knock down the doors of unfairness, start with the more than half of the white kids who are there just ‘cause of who their families were in the past. Our families couldn’t have gotten there in the past, and now, maybe not in the future as well.
